About Casa Retortillo
Hand made functional ceramics
Photographer and ceramic artist Ángela Martín-Retortillo is the driving force behind the Madrid-based Spanish ceramic studio Casa Retortillo.
"My passion for ceramics began in childhood, but it was not until 2025, following an unexpected turning point in both my professional and personal life, that I was able to embrace ceramics as my primary practice".

A gaze shaped
by art and photography
"I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s in Art History, Theory and Criticism from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My professional career has been primarily devoted to photography, working for both editorial publications and corporate clients. I see myself as a visual storyteller"
"In 2025, I travelled to Slovenia to attend workshops with ceramic artist Hana Karim, an experience that marked the beginning of a deeper commitment to the discipline."
The process
Pieces created
to be used
The work is done by hand, away from the wheel and from overly perfect finishes. Slabs, pinching, organic shapes and the visible trace of the hand are part of each piece’s language.
"Working within the field of contemporary functional ceramics, I celebrate the beauty of what is not exact, symmetrical, or perfect. I am drawn to a slightly awkward uniqueness—one that evokes tenderness and invites a more intimate relationship with everyday objects."
